Ceramic Sculpture
6 pm to 9 pm
Instructor: Randy Pottenger
Non-members $275; Members $245 [includes $85 materials fee]
Summer classes open to youth ages 12 and up.
Clay is a wonderful, tactile medium and what you can create from a lump of clay is almost limitless. In this class we explore a variety hand building methods and design concepts that will help students achieve their goals. A variety of texturing methods, surface treatments and glazing possibilities will be presented. If you’ve been frustrated with traditional throwing methods, come and see what you can do with the “other way” of working with clay.
Also offered are methods for creating tall ceramic structures composed of small modular components threaded over a central support. Mid-range stoneware clay and glazes will be used, making the structure suitable indoor or outdoor display.
Beginning and advanced students welcome. Summer classes open to youth ages 12 and up.
Randy received her Master’s degree in Design in Fiber Sculpture from San Francisco State University in the late ‘70s. She worked professionally as a typesetter and graphic designer in the printing industry until stopping to raise a family. For the past 20 years Randy has concentrated on the various aspects of hand-built stoneware ceramics. Her pieces are in many private collections and have been sold nationwide through the Discovery Channel Stores. Randy’s studio is located at the Novato Arts Center, Building 500, Studio104. |

The Portrait and the Figure
10 am to 1 pm
Instructor: Kathleen Lack
Non-members $175; Members $150. Plus model fee not to exceed $35.
NEW: This class now offers a drop in option, space permitting. Per session fees by check or in cash only. Non-members $50; Members $45. Plus $5 model fee. All drop in fees paid to instructor at the beginning of the session. Class size limited to 12.
Drawing and painting from a live model provides the opportunity to capture the attitude and emotion of the subject in a moment of time. The nuances of light, reflections and shadows on the form are defining and inspirational. You will receive individualized instruction in composition, color, proportions and the use of your medium of choice. Beginners and advanced students are welcome.
Kathleen's inspiration to paint and draw people is constant. When she observes people, she says "I am seeing a soft golden hue against the face, an expression of emotional involvement when playing the cello, the strong morning sunlight creating magical contours over a child’s face - and I am compelled to capture that on canvas." To her, it is the intensity of that moment, the graceful body positions, the light, shadows, and colors that need to be rendered. See more of Kathleen's work at www.kathleenlack.com |
