Wabi Sabi Ink Painting
Saturday, August 9; 10am – 4pm
Instructor: Sherrie Lovler
Embrace the unknown as you explore abstract art from both Eastern and Western perspectives to create your own finished paintings.
Wabi Sabi is the Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in life’s imperfections. This allows us to let go of the desire for perfection and free ourselves to explore the uncontrolled parts of life. In art, a great example of this is experiencing the magic that happens when ink meets water, or gestural marks that emerge without planning.
Beginning with meditation and centering, your whole body will become involved as you work from the heart to paint the ensō (the Zen practice of drawing a circle). You will work with Asian brushes and ink to make calligraphic lines that express both movement and stillness, and add watercolor accents.
Sherrie Lovler holds a B.A. in Studio Art and has been teaching calligraphy and related arts for several decades. She is well known in the Western calligraphy world, having taught at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, La Romita School of Art in Italy, accredited classes at Northern Arizona University, calligraphy guilds including San Francisco’s Friends of Calligraphy and New York City’s Society of Scribes, and International Calligraphy Conferences.
She is the author, illustrator, and designer of On Softer Ground: Paintings, Poems and Calligraphy, winning a gold medal for Most Outstanding Book Design from Independent Publishers Book (IPPY) Awards.
