
Mexican Sugar Skulls: History and Creation
Saturday, October 4; 11am – 1pm
Instructor: Diego Marcial Rios
Hand paint and decorate a Mexican sugar skull steeped in the rich cultural history of Mexico.
History: You will hear a brief historical lecture summarizing the origin of sugar art in Italian culture and how this unique media was introduced to native people of North America.
Demonstration: You will learn the ingredients and application techniques necessary to decorate a sugar skull. Then you will roll up your sleeves and decorate your own unique work. Pre-made sugar skulls and all decorations will be provided for this workshop.
Diego Marcial Rios received a B.F.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, an M.A. and an M.F.A from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has exhibited his work at the National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago; the Sonoma Art Center; and Expressions Art Gallery, Berkeley.
