Place and Color: Drawing with Stencils
Saturday, November 8; 10am to 1pm
Instructor: Megan Broughton
In this workshop you will create large scale stencils whose organic shapes reference the local Marin landscape (grasses, tree leaves, etc.) You will share these stencils among your classmates to create individual 18x24" colored pencil drawings, building up shapes and overlapping colors to create abstracted works with local significance.
The instructor will discuss her own artistic process and materials, and share about her experimental etching practice. You will learn the Arctic influences and local connections behind her newest body of experimental etchings, “Ice Watch Studies”.
You will talk about form and content; the concept that artistic ideas should be deliberately paired with techniques and processes that best convey those ideas. Using communal stencils will help you to think beyond your own ideas, tools, and plans.
The instructor will provide mylar, sharpies, scissors, drawing paper (3 sheets per student), colored pencils, and erasers.
Megan Broughton is a multidisciplinary artist based in San Francisco, CA, addressing the climate crisis, loss, transformation, and the sublime. She uses ice, fog, and air currents to underline our daily environments at risk. Her work stems from onsite study in the Arctic, whose materiality and geologic deep time shapes and influences her practice. Exhibition highlights include Berkeley Art Center, Richmond Art Center, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Notable residencies include MaréMotrice in Greenland and The Arctic Circle Residency in Svalbard. Megan holds a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). She was a 2023 California Arts Council Emerging Individual Artist Fellow and is a 2025 Gallery Route One Fellow.
