Tunnel Book

Saturday, April 18; 2pm to 5pm

Instructor: Mimi Zycherman

Learn to create a Tunnel book, an art craft that dates back to the 18th century. Tunnel books were originally called “peep shows” and were inspired by theatrical stage sets. These books contain pages pieced together into folded accordion strips of paper on each side. The overall effect is an illusion of depth and perspective. You may choose a simple format with contrasting colors, sizes and shapes, or a more complex storytelling format, with each frame contributing to the story.

You will learn basic bookmaking terminology and the use of some book tools. A step-by-step handout will be provided, along with a glossary.

You will be asked to bring:

  • Scissors

  • Self-healing cutting mat

  • Straight edge or 12- to 18-inch cork-backed metal ruler

  • Mat knife

  • Bone folder

  • Pencil and eraser
