Cyanotype on Fabric: Wearable Sun Prints

Saturday, August 1; 1:30pm to 4:30pm

Instructor: Mohammed Shamma

This workshop brings cyanotype printing off paper and onto fabric, opening new creative possibilities and perfect for both photography and textile enthusiasts. You will learn how to prepare natural fiber fabrics (cotton and silk) with cyanotype sensitizer, arrange botanical specimens and photographic negatives as stencils, and expose prints in direct sunlight. The instructor will cover fabric-specific techniques including pre-washing, even coating application with foam brushes, extended wash times for textiles, and heat-setting for durability and washability. You will create 2-3 finished pieces, including bandanas, silk scarves, cotton patches, or fabric swatches for framing. All materials are provided, including pre-cut fabric. No experience is necessary.

Over the past decade, Mohammed has returned to analog photography as a way of reconnecting with craft and materiality. His work often employs unconventional surfaces, including papyrus, to explore the intersection of his Egyptian heritage with contemporary travel, landscape, and street photography. He invites viewers to reflect on how we perceive artifacts, museums, and archaeological sites through our globally connected lenses. Mohammed works across multiple image-transfer and printing techniques—including inkjet, dye sublimation, thermal transfer, cyanotype, and Polaroid emulsion lifts—and is currently focused on the intricacies of carbon transfer printing.
