Trail Notes

May – August 2027

ASHWINI BHAT
Marin Museum of Contemporary Art
May -August 2027 (dates TBD)

Ashwini Bhat’s solo exhibition, Trail Notes, at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art
continues her ongoing exploration of place and self. Since relocating from Southern India to the
Bay Area during the 2017 Tubbs Fire, Bhat has rooted her practice in the rhythms of the land and
the lingering aftershocks of catastrophe. She reflects on how the resilience of the landscape—
especially the Redwoods—inspired her to make the North Bay her home after thirty five years in
Southern India and a largely nomadic life since the age of sixteen.
This exhibition builds on Bhat’s ongoing field-based project Assembling California, a deeply
personal and ecological mapping of presence, transformation, and ritual. While Trail Notes
emerges in part from her recent survey exhibition, Ashwini Bhat: Reverberating Self, at the John
Michael Kohler Arts Center—featuring works not previously shown in the Bay Area—it also
introduces a new body of work created specifically for the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art.
