Compositing Introduction: In this hands-on workshop you will compose a surrealistic design that expresses a believable vision through the seamless juxtaposition of your selected collage elements using original source materials in a mixed-media approach. Using a variety of cutting tools and archival adhesives, you will arrange a dynamic composition while examining key design principles of color, texture, balance, and narrative flow.
Compositing is the technique of combining visual elements from separate sources into single images, creating the illusion that all the elements are parts of the same scene. Finished examples and some art historical context will be presented.
Compositing Intermediate: This workshop will build on the morning’s “Compositing Introduction” session but may also be enjoyed as a stand-alone. In this session, the focus will be on strategies to reverse-engineer complex compositions for gluing, refining transitions between various collage elements, and finish coatings. In a supportive creative environment, you will explore different cutting, layout, and gluing techniques. Individual attention will be given to each artist to discuss compositional or technical issues as your artwork evolves.
Katya McCulloch is a community artist whose work is exhibited internationally and in private and public collections including the Library of Congress, UC Berkeley, Stanford University, Emory University, among many other special collection libraries. Her current “Liberty Series” collage work was exhibited in the de Young Open 2023. She believes strongly that art is not just a profession, but a universal need that marks our humanity.
