Step into the world of experimental filmmaking in this immersive, hands-on workshop where you’ll create and screen real 16mm film. We will watch short films and learn about filmmaking as an art medium, and then you will pick up a filmstrip to create your own direct animation on found footage. Workshop participants create direct animation by drawing and scratching on found 16mm educational filmstrips. At each workshop, the filmstrips are spliced together with those from previous workshops, and the growing film is screened in its entirety. This continuously evolving artwork embodies collaborative, experimental filmmaking rooted in community. The film expands and deepens with every workshop session.

No filmmaking experience is required, and all materials will be provided.

Nate Mahoney creates art inspired by dualities. Design and art. Rural and urban. Photography and painting. Analog and digital. The work is centered on compassion for others trying to survive in our complex and inhospitable world. As a queer artist, and urban dweller, Nate reacts to the city with inspired work that communicates connections between people, time, nature, place, and space. Nate’s works result from a research practice and collaborative process. Nate designs events to bring people together around art.

Nate received an MFA in Design from California College of the Arts, an MFA in Cinema and Photography from Southern Illinois University, and a BA in Liberal Arts from The Evergreen State College. He lives and works in downtown San Francisco, California.
