Learn about the wonders of paper! Paper weaving is often first discovered in elementary school, but by changing the variables such as the paper strip width, shape, color, thickness, texture, and even the direction in which the strips are placed, the results can be breathtaking and complex.

You will learn about tools that will make the paper cutting and weaving process easier. You will look at examples of artists who weave with paper and then begin! You will warm up with a simple over-and-under weave, move on to more complex patterns, and finish by trying out triaxial weaving, or “mad weave”. The instructor will also discuss how to finish and display your work. An assortment of papers will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own too.

Rena Tom is an artist, writer, and independent curator based in Berkeley, CA whose interests span photography, prints, textiles, zines and artist’s books, and installation. She holds an MA in Critical Craft Studies from Warren Wilson College and dual degrees in English and Mechanical Engineering from UC Santa Barbara. A deep curiosity about objects, making, and makers, as well as the spaces they inhabit, is the throughline spanning 20+ years as a craftsperson, designer, shopkeeper, gallerist, instructor, and event producer. Rena utilizes mundane objects, optical illusions, and found imagery to question and reframe everyday experience. She runs the micropublishing project Not Great, Not Terrible, volunteers with a community-oriented Riso printshop, and produces large-scale participatory art installations plus the occasional pirate radio broadcast.
