Learn how to make watercolor paints from two natural pigment sources, plants and rocks gathered locally and create a painting using these paints.

The instructor will discuss paint and pigments in general and will discuss natural pigments and their various sources in more detail, offering a better understanding and appreciation for the pigments we can access in our natural world.

You will make a lake pigment by heating a dye bath, adding alum and soda ash, and letting it settle and strain. You will then create another paint out of crushed rocks and clay.

Once you have finished the paints, you will create a painting using the variety of natural pigment paints provided by the instructor. You will leave with one rock watercolor paint, one lake pigment watercolor paint, and a natural pigment painting.

Simone Lassar (she/her) is a queer Jewish artist living on Ohlone land (Oakland, CA), exploring cycles through printmaking, papermaking, and natural pigments. Raised by biologist parents and the Massachusetts mud, a curiosity and connection to the Earth has flowed through her body as long as it has existed. She looks to the environment and materials around her for inspiration, letting abundance and availability shape what she creates. Simone entered the world of natural pigments through working with natural dyer Helen Krayenhoff and has been fascinated by color from plants, rocks and clays ever since. Day to day Simone works as a teaching artist with SFArtsEd and as a freelance illustrator.
