Embrace tracing! Learn how to incorporate traced images in your art making process using a variety of techniques including projection, carbon paper, and light boxes. David Hockney’s book and documentary Secret Knowledge is used as a reference for this class.

This workshop is designed to destigmatize tracing and recognize it as a valid drawing technique. You will transfer a print or electronic image onto paper or canvas using a variety of techniques including carbon paper, projectors or computer screens.

Students are encouraged to bring their own paper or canvas (no bigger than 20” square), colored pencils, pastels, markers, or water-based paint to color in their drawings or paintings. Students may bring an image of their choice or choose from images provided by the teacher. Students may also opt to bring their own projector or laptop to use as a light box.

Ilah Jarvis has taught watercolor all over Northern California for over twenty years, including at Studio One and The Richmond Art Center. She has exhibited her watercolors nationally and received a month-long residency at the Fundacion Valparaiso in Mojacar, Spain in 2003. She is a graduate of the California College of Arts (and Crafts) and is passionate about watercolor and the art making process. She encourages her students to challenge themselves creatively and to develop their own unique styles.
