Embrace the unknown as you explore abstract art from both Eastern and Western perspectives to create your own finished paintings.

Wabi Sabi is the Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in life’s imperfections. This allows us to let go of the desire for perfection and free ourselves to explore the uncontrolled parts of life. In art, a great example of this is experiencing the magic that happens when ink meets water, or gestural marks that emerge without planning.

Beginning with meditation and centering, your whole body will become involved as you work from the heart to paint the ensō (the Zen practice of drawing a circle). You will work with Asian brushes and ink to make calligraphic lines that express both movement and stillness, and add watercolor accents.

Sherrie Lovler holds a B.A. in Studio Art and has been teaching calligraphy and related arts for several decades. She is well known in the Western calligraphy world, having taught at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, La Romita School of Art in Italy, accredited classes at Northern Arizona University, calligraphy guilds including San Francisco’s Friends of Calligraphy and New York City’s Society of Scribes, and International Calligraphy Conferences.

She is the author, illustrator, and designer of On Softer Ground: Paintings, Poems and Calligraphy, winning a gold medal for Most Outstanding Book Design from Independent Publishers Book (IPPY) Awards. Her latest book, Distant Voices, explores art as a collaboration with nature, memory, and unseen influences.

 Materials List

These supplies are recommended. You can substitute other supplies, depending on what you have on hand and what you want to work with. Riley Street in San Rafael has most of these supplies.

Paper:

2 sheets watercolor paper approx. 22x30” cut in half to 4 sheets 22x15”

  • Arches 90 lb or 140 lb. hot press or similar paper. Can be cold press (rougher) if you like.

  • Other brands might be smaller in size and that’s okay.

Brushes:

Two inexpensive pointed brushes

  • One for painting in small areas, such as: Royal & Langnickel Zen Brush – Round, Size 4, Short Handle

  • (Some stores carry a set of different sizes and styles, which is nice to have.)

  • One for mixing brush: Size 5 or (this brush should have some “spring” to it) such as “Kingart White Nylon Brush”.

One 2-3” wide foam brush (Your local art supply store or Home Depot)

Paint:

Watercolor: A small tube of red, yellow and blue. If you have gouache instead, that will work too. A nice variation of red, yellow, and blue is Daniel Smith: Pyrrol Orange, New Gamboge, and Indigo.

Small palette for paint (such as a round one with 10 wells)
