Photo weaving introduces visual patterns, textures, and rhythms into existing two-dimensional imagery.  In this workshop, you will take favorite photographs to another level, weaving them by hand into art that melds textiles, paper craft, and sculpture. The delightfully glitchy results can foster new ideas about time, memory, and non-linear narrative.

You will learn techniques and discuss tools that make the paper cutting and weaving process easier. You will study the work of artists who weave with photos and consider how different weaving patterns affect the chosen imagery. The instructor will discuss ideas for finishing and displaying your work, or the option of developing it further to create functional work for the home. During the workshop you will complete one to two weavings, depending on their size and complexity.

No prior weaving experience is required.

Please bring printouts of photos you’d like to experiment with, whether they are family photos, archival documents, or found imagery; guidelines will be sent to participants before the workshop. Feel free to also bring decorative paper you’ve made or collected.

Rena Tom is an artist, writer, and independent curator based in Berkeley, CA whose interests span photography, prints, textiles, zines and artist’s books, and installation. She holds an MA in Critical Craft Studies from Warren Wilson College and dual degrees in English and Mechanical Engineering from UC Santa Barbara. A deep curiosity about objects, making, and makers, as well as the spaces they inhabit, is the throughline spanning 20+ years as a craftsperson, designer, shopkeeper, gallerist, instructor, and event producer. Rena utilizes mundane objects, optical illusions, and found imagery to question and reframe everyday experience. She runs the micropublishing project Not Great, Not Terrible, volunteers with a community-oriented Riso printshop, and produces large-scale participatory art installations plus the occasional pirate radio broadcast.
