This three-day workshop will introduce you to creative coding and explore programming as a tool for artistic expression.

You will begin to think about your visual pieces in terms of a series of rules which you will write, and you will look at Kandinsky’s “Point and Line to Plane” to guide you. You will reference creative coding with artists like Sol LeWitt, Nam Jun Paik, and even early needlework. You will then learn the steps to creating your own graphic program (using p5.js) to generate the patterns that will lead to your final work.

Throughout the course you will learn about Boolean Logic, If Statements, For Loops, and Arrays, and will start to think about cataloguing and archiving with data. At the completion of the class, you will have a general understanding of how computer programming works and how to think logically about generating images with code. The last class will have an open showcase where you may display your new media work.

Duncan Figurski is an artist, educator and designer who loves to get weird with the interdisciplinary - in many cases the computational becomes the emulsifier across modalities. Duncan has taught and developed curriculum on Art and Technology at NYU, the New School, and Parsons School of Design. Duncan has shown his work at the Hirshhorn, was a Resident at Pinea Linea de la Costa and curated large-scale installation works at the Gowanus Ballroom and other shoddy warehouses
across New York City. Duncan founded the Hidden Currencies Art Collective, Hecatombe Magazine, Destruction Junket Collective and was and was a co-founder and Design Lead at Fireplace 409 Gallery. Duncan currently works as a Production Manager at the Exploratorium where he
manages the production of interactive exhibits.
